This year’s World Sight Day Challenge will celebrate the capacity of people power to assist those in desperate need of eye care, as Australian practices, companies and optometry students join thousands from around the world in fund raising this month (October).

The winning practice of the World Sight Day Challenge in 2012, Sure Optical in New South Wales, will hold another ‘Highballs for Eyeballs’ cocktail event on October 10; and the team from Eyecare Plus practices in Taree and Gloucester, New South Wales, has planned a 50km walk between the towns of North Haven and Harrington. Additionally they will sell raffles and hold a fundraising barbeque.

Essilor Australia has recommitted to matching the highest funds raised by a practice in Australia (up to AU$5,000). Additionally, Tim Thurn, (Essilor Professional Services ANZ), will donate two days of his time to the practice that raises the most money for the World
Sight Day Challenge.

Wrist Bands

New World Sight Day Challenge wristbands have been introduced as an easy way for practices or companies to engage staff and customer donations.

“We’re suggesting a $5 donation for each wristband, which is enough to help someone in the developing world access an eye exam and a pair of glasses,” said Ron Baroni, country manager of Optometry Giving Sight Australia.

“It’s a great message to be able to share with someone when they make a donation; they’ve helped to transform a life.”
