Macquarie University goes to Google for Work
Macquarie University is a really interesting campus. It’s about the number one campus in Australia for environmental science, and we have a great business school, the Australian School of Advanced Medicine, what we really care about is a digital experience of being on our campus. And of course Google’s a pretty big part of that.
We want the best people coming to our university to learn and to teach, we want to give them the technology that they want to use. Here at Macquarie University we are very much focused on giving our students the flexibility to be able to do their work from anywhere, anytime. Google Apps is the key to delivering that flexibility. It is on the cloud, we can work on them in campus, we can work on it at home, you can have people in multiple locations in multiple countries on multiple continents if we want, all working on the same document.
It really helps your productivity. Most of our students, they have a life outside of university. I have my studies, I have work and then a little bit of fun on top of that. And because Google Apps integrates so seamlessly, they allow for that busy lifestyle. I give them a project to do and without telling them, they just automatically go in and start using Google Apps.
We have Gmail, we have Google Docs, we have chat. We can use all those resources in order to help us with our studies. The cost equation is extremely compelling, but it’s not the cost equation, it’s the value. We want to sell solve gene sequencing. We want to solve cancer. These are the things that we need to invest our money in, not in mail systems and data centers and racks of computers. Having all the products right there, it makes life as a university student much easier.
